The theme tune was a rhyme with its base in a superstition.  It relates to the portent of the number of magpies seen together....

One for sorrow, two for joy, three for a  girl and four for a boy.  Five for silver, six for gold, seven for a secret never to be told.

Eight's a wish, nine's a kiss and ten's a bird you must not miss ....

Magpie was broadcast twice a week, it was a magazine format show, it did features on science, history and comedy, environment issues, expeditions to foreign parts and action stunts.

Magpie is and will always be compared to Blue Peter. Fans think that it had hipper and sexier presenters.  It appealed to a slightly older audience and covered topics Blue Peter avoided. Magpie did an annual appeal just like Blue Peter but it collected cash rather than silver paper, keys etc.

Magpie also awarded viewers with badges but with different values depending on what the viewer had done.

It was on ITV on Tuesday and Friday so never clashed with Blue Peter directly on Monday and Thursday.

The final episode was broadcast on 6th June 1980.
